Heart Health Dark chocolate might help prevent cardiovascular health problems that result from elevated blood pressure and cholesterol, according to a study of more than 2,000 patients with metabolic syndrome -- a combination of conditions that increase the risks for heart disease and diabetes. Participants in the study, published in the May 2012 journal "BMJ," consumed 100 grams of dark chocolate daily. Researchers projected that daily dark chocolate consumption is a healthy habit that could reduce the incidence of metabolic syndrome-related heart attacks and strokes by nearly 1 percent.

Cancer Prevention Antioxidants in cocoa may give dark chocolate potential cancer-preventive benefits, according to a study published in 2009 in "Nutrition and Cancer." The review of previously published research found that strong antioxidant activity in cocoa and cocoa products, such as dark chocolate, prevent inflammation and oxidation -- cell damage due to accumulated toxins and waste products; both conditions are associated with increased cancer risk.

Antidepressant Benefits Dark chocolate improved mood in healthy, middle-aged participants in a study reported in "Journal of Psychopharmacology."
